Taking time in the blazing-fast-paced world
I know. I can imagine you say something like “How can I ‘take my time’ while everyone else is running late to stay relevant.”
“Staying relevant” has been the main talking point in my social media feeds. Especially as a designer, we’re talking more and more about shifting away from traditional design tools and embracing AI-driven solutions to generate designs more quickly.
I’m not saying that these AI trends live inside an echo chamber. I do believe that the AI-hype is something worth paying attention to. I agree with people being on the look out for what’s next. Some already calling it a bubble, but it still moves like crazy. But yeah keep your eyes open.
Because the tech changes that used to take years, now only take weeks. Crazy!
But, some X and LinkedIn posts have gone from worth-reading, to annoying, to outright insufferable. It’s like the so-called experts are establishing an imaginary dichotomy between “AI-driven {insert job here}” vs “the ones that will be replaced by AI”.
Again, this is not an argument against AI itself. It’s a message for myself and others reading, not to get carried away too much with all these “AI will replace your job” shit.
It’s exhausting and making me sad to hear all these anxiety from my closest peers about being laid off due to AI. I know some happened for real, but it’s no use to always wither away and drown in despair.
So just… sit back… you know… take a breath… sip your coffee, matcha, take a bite out of your overpriced burgers, I don’t know. (you’re not buying a house with full cash payments anytime soon anyway).
Because time will pass anyway, here’s how to walk (or crawl, you decide) forward (slowly, but forward) in this too-crazy-too-bear-blazing-fast-paced world:
- Watch YouTube tutorials on… let’s pause here for a second. Anything related to coding is not always the answer, take a crash course in Data Science, sure. But you know… choose what’s good for you. Heck, if I have land, I’d learn how to grow crops all year long.
- Write stuff. Not like Medium stuff to look smart, wise, or anything. And not short stuff on X. Write on your notes app, write on your personal blog. Don’t use grammar checkers, don’t use AI at all. Be yourself for a few seconds.
- Talk, go outside, have a coffee date with someone. Jeez get off ChatGPT for a minute god dammit.
- Cook. It’s good for the soul.
That’s it probably. I don’t know, you know better how to take things slow. Point is, take your time.
